Does Simply Straightening Your Back Change Your Judgment? The Surprising Relationship Between "Posture and Mind"

Before sending an important email, speaking up in a meeting, or making investment or shopping decisions, we usually think that the amount of information, experience, personality, and physical condition influence our decisions.

However, the posture in which we sit at that moment might also have a slight influence on our judgment.

In an experiment published by a research team from McGill University in Canada, people who worked on tasks in an environment conducive to sitting upright reported more positive emotions and tended to achieve higher results in games involving risk and reward compared to those in an environment that encouraged slouching.

Notably, the researchers did not directly instruct participants to "straighten your posture" or "take a confident pose."

What the research team changed was mainly the position of the tablet and the height of the desk. Participants, thinking they were evaluating the usability of a mobile app, unknowingly adjusted their posture to be more upright or slouched.

Did posture affect the mind, or did it change the way participants approached the tasks? This study approaches the long-debated "relationship between body and emotion" in a manner close to everyday life.


Changing posture through the environment without informing the participant

About 200 people from the McGill University community and other sources participated in the experiment.

Participants first completed a computer-based task and then moved on to another task involving a tablet device. They were told by researchers that it was a task to evaluate an app for tablets.

In one group, the tablet was placed on a stand on a height-adjustable desk. To view the screen, participants naturally had to raise their heads, which encouraged an upright posture.

In another group, the tablet was laid flat on a low desk. To view the screen, participants had to crane their necks forward, leading to a design that encouraged a slouched posture.

The research team measured the angle of the neck from footage of the participants to confirm whether the intended posture differences actually occurred.

This is where it significantly differs from past "power pose" research.

In traditional experiments, participants were often explicitly instructed to take poses such as puffing out their chests, spreading their arms, or making their bodies appear larger. In such cases, participants might guess the aim of the experiment and respond in a way they think the researchers expect.

In this experiment, instead of changing posture, the arrangement of the equipment was altered. Upon checking after the experiment, many participants were unaware that their posture had been manipulated.

In other words, the possibility was considered that the posture, which accidentally occurred due to the environment, was related to emotions and behavior, rather than being informed that "good posture should boost confidence."


Measuring "risk-taking" with a virtual balloon

Participants played a game where they inflated a virtual balloon displayed on the screen.

Each time they pressed a button to inflate the balloon, the rewards they could earn increased. However, if they inflated it too much, the balloon would burst, and they would lose all the rewards for that round.

If they secured the reward early, it was safe but the amount earned was small. Inflating it further allowed for larger rewards but also increased the risk of bursting.

In this task, simply being bold was not enough. Being too cautious would miss out on profits, while being too reckless would lose rewards. It required risk judgment on how far to challenge and when to stop.

The experiment results showed that the group with an upright posture tended to inflate the balloon more and earn higher overall rewards compared to the slouched group.

The result was not that "straightening your back makes you reckless." Despite taking greater risks, they ultimately earned more rewards, which researchers interpreted as "more effective risk-taking" rather than impulsive behavior.

Of course, just because they performed well in the game does not mean it can be concluded that decisions in real-life investments, management, employment, or medical situations will improve.

Still, even when receiving the same information, the degree to which one feels "let's try a little more" might change depending on the physical state.


The change was more in the feeling of "pride" than "happiness"

The experiment not only involved games but also asked participants about their feelings.

In the upright group, there was a tendency for the feeling of "pride" to be stronger compared to the slouched group.

Here, pride is not limited to the meaning of looking down on others. It is closer to a psychological state of positively perceiving one's actions and abilities, feeling "I can do it" or "I can go a little further."

Interestingly, it was not that emotions changed uniformly just by assigning posture conditions; the actual neck angle measured from the footage partially influenced the change in pride.

In other words, even within the same group, there might have been differences in psychological changes depending on how much they actually straightened their upper body.

On the other hand, this result should not be interpreted as "straightening your back cures depression or anxiety."

What was confirmed this time were relatively small short-term changes that occurred in a controlled experimental environment. It is not a study that examined therapeutic effects on mental illnesses or the impact of long-term posture changes.

While posture may be related to mood, it is not the only switch that determines mood. Real emotions involve numerous factors such as sleep, stress, relationships, health, and economic anxiety.


How is this different from the "power pose" controversy?

When hearing about posture affecting psychology, some might feel it's the same as the previously popular power pose.

The power pose spread as the idea that taking postures that make the body appear larger, such as standing with legs apart, puffing out the chest, or placing hands on the hips, leads to changes in confidence, behavior, and even hormones.

Initial studies reported that short-term poses increased testosterone and decreased cortisol related to stress. However, subsequent studies failed to replicate these findings, and the strong effects on hormones faced severe criticism.

Later meta-analyses suggested that while posture might cause small changes in self-evaluation and emotions, the dramatic physiological effects initially claimed were not supported.

The McGill University study did not measure hormones. It is not a study that proved "straightening your back increases testosterone" or "lowers stress hormones."

The important point in this study is that instead of consciously making participants take dramatic poses, they created differences in posture without the participants' awareness by changing the arrangement of desks and devices.

The focus of the research is not on self-help claims like "taking a strong pose makes you a successful person," but on the possibility that everyday work environments might have small effects on emotions and behavior through the body.


Mixed reactions of welcome, doubt, and caution on social media

As far as can be confirmed through public searches, there are not many social media posts directly referring to the ScienceDaily article or the original paper at this point to spark large-scale discussions.

However, when including existing social media posts about the relationship between posture and psychology or the power pose, reactions are largely divided into three directions. The following is not a verbatim quote from individual posts but a summary of the points of public reactions.

The first is a positive reaction, "It's cost-free and easy, so I want to try it."

Many people slouch during long hours of desk work. Actions like bringing the screen closer to eye level, sitting deeply in the chair, or straightening up before an online meeting can be started without special tools.

Therefore, reactions such as "Let's improve posture at least before making important decisions" and "I want to review the height of my work desk" are easily received as hints for lifestyle improvement.

The second is a cautious reaction, "Isn't this another power pose talk?" or "Is the reproducibility okay?"

Posture research experienced controversy over reproducibility after strong effects were initially highlighted. People who continuously follow scientific news are more likely to think, "We shouldn't draw conclusions from just one experiment" and "I want to check the effect size and control conditions."

Such skepticism does not deny the research. Rather, it is important to distinguish between sensational headlines and the actual scope demonstrated by the paper.

The third is the reaction, "Instead of placing the responsibility for posture on individuals, workplace environments should be improved."

Simply instructing employees to "straighten your back more" might end up placing the blame on individuals.

In workplaces with low laptops, non-adjustable desks, long hours of sitting, and difficulty taking breaks, maintaining correct posture itself is challenging.

This study is characterized by the fact that posture changed due to the arrangement of the environment rather than personal willpower. Therefore, the practical message is not "individuals should muster the will to correct their posture," but "can we design environments that naturally lead to less strenuous postures?"


Beware of misunderstandings that easily spread on social media

Posture research is very compatible with social media.

Messages like "gain confidence in just a few minutes" or "change your sitting posture to succeed at work" are short, easy to understand, and easy to share.

In fact, even now on social media, there are posts asserting that posture changes increase testosterone and decrease cortisol. However, past claims about hormones have weak reproducibility and do not accurately represent current research as a whole.

What this study showed is that small differences in emotions and risk behavior in games occurred due to posture. It did not investigate whether income increases, negotiations always succeed, investment decisions become accurate, or mental illnesses improve.

The expression "effects were statistically confirmed" does not mean "everyone experiences clear changes." Even if there were differences between groups on average, individual responses can vary greatly.

When reading scientific news on social media, it is necessary to confirm what was measured, what the comparison targets were, and the extent of the effects.


Desks and screens might be part of the "psychological environment"

The most practical application from this study might be the desk environment at work or home.

Placing a laptop directly on the desk makes it easy to lower the head to see the screen. Using tablets or smartphones at a low position can cause the neck to bend forward, leading to a hunched posture.

Using external monitors or device stands to place the screen at a comfortable height can make it easier to maintain an upright posture without constantly being conscious of it.

However, it is not necessary to maintain an ideal posture all day long. No matter how perfect the posture, if you don't move for a long time, it will strain your muscles and joints.

What's important is not maintaining a straight "correct posture" continuously, but creating an environment where you can change posture according to the task, stand up occasionally, and move your body.

There is no need to purchase expensive chairs or desks based solely on this psychological research. However, it is worth checking if the screen is too low, if the chair height is appropriate, or if you can't read text without leaning forward.

Adjustments made for physical comfort might, as a result, also affect mood and approach to tasks.


Limitations of the study—Results from "about 200 people" cannot be generalized to everyone

This study has several important limitations.

First, participants were mainly gathered from around a Canadian university, with many young women and students. It is unknown whether similar results would be obtained in groups with different ages, occupations, cultures, or health conditions.

The meaning of posture might also change depending on culture and social context. A posture with a puffed-out chest might be perceived as confidence in some situations, while in others, it might be seen as intimidating, rude, or restless.

Next, the experiment used a virtual balloon game. While it has an aspect close to everyday decision-making, it differs in weight from decisions involving real money, health, career, and relationships.

Moreover, the effects confirmed were relatively small. Changing posture once does not change personality or permanently improve decision-making ability.

The researchers themselves do not claim that changing posture dramatically changes lives. The results suggest that posture might be one of many environmental factors that cannot be ignored.

Future studies will need to include replication studies targeting a wider range of ages and cultures, verification of long-term effects, and experiments in actual workplaces and schools.


Posture is both a "result" and an "input" of emotions

When feeling down, people tend to look down, pull their shoulders inward, and make their bodies smaller. When confident, they lift their faces, open their chests, and look around widely.

We usually consider such postures as results of emotions.

However, the relationship between body and mind might not be one-directional. Not only do emotions create posture, but the information returning from posture to the brain might slightly adjust emotions and behavior.

What makes this study interesting is that it suggests the possibility of this feedback occurring by changing the position of screens and desks without making efforts to "be conscious of correct posture."

Straightening your back is neither magic nor a cure. It does not make you capable of making excellent decisions by itself.

However, before starting important work, adjust the screen height, stabilize your feet, and sit without bending your neck too much. Stand up every few minutes and reset your posture.

Such small adjustments can at least help reduce the burden on the body. And as this study suggests, they might also provide a slight tailwind to mood and approach to challenges.

Big decisions are not necessarily changed only by big events.

The height of the desk we use every day and the angle of the neck when looking at the screen. The physical state that usually doesn't even reach awareness might quietly be involved in the movement of the mind.
