On the lecture video screen, a professor is shown speaking with a calm expression. The mouth movements match the audio, and the gestures appear natural. The voice has intonation, and there is hardly any discomfort in the gaze directed at the camera.

However, that professor might not have spoken a single word in front of the camera.

Universities are beginning to experiment with creating lecture videos using AI avatars and synthetic voices modeled after real faculty members. With technological advancements, the boundary between footage actually shot by humans and that generated by AI has rapidly blurred. In short videos, it is becoming increasingly common for students to be unsure of the difference.

A video article published by the Brisbane Times on September 11, 2026, addressed this very issue. It discussed how universities are experimenting with AI avatar lectures, making it difficult for students to distinguish them from human lectures.

At first glance, this might seem like a discussion about video production technology. However, the introduction of AI avatars into university education raises more fundamental questions.

What are students purchasing at university? Is it knowledge, qualifications, or a learning experience that includes dialogue with experts and unexpected discoveries?


What AI Avatars Bring to Universities

The reasons universities are interested in AI instructors are straightforward.

Traditional lecture videos require a filming studio, cameras, lighting, and editing staff. If an instructor makes a mistake, retakes are necessary, and if systems or data change, re-recording is also required.

With AI avatars, new videos can be created simply by rewriting the script. Translation and dubbing into multiple languages become easier, and instructors do not need to visit the studio each time. Combining support for hearing and language can also potentially improve access to educational materials.

For international students in different time zones, working adults studying while working, and students far from campus, lectures that can be viewed at any time are a significant advantage. The ability to change playback speed and repeat unclear parts is also a strength not found in face-to-face lectures.

If the professor designs the content, fact-checks it, and the AI avatar conveys that knowledge, AI can become a new medium for widely delivering knowledge rather than a substitute for instructors.

This is particularly effective for foundational courses that repeat almost the same explanations every year, guidance on course registration, short supplementary materials, and the production of multilingual versions. If instructors are freed from routine explanations and can devote that time to answering questions, small group instruction, and research, it benefits students as well.


Experiments Show "No Clear Difference Between Humans and AI"

Do educational materials using AI avatars really aid learning?

A study published in 2023 randomly divided 83 adult learners into two groups, showing one group videos of human instructors and the other group synthetic videos with realistic AI characters.

As a result, both groups improved their test scores after the course, but no statistically significant difference in learning growth was observed. There was also no clear difference in participants' evaluations of the videos.

In other words, under limited conditions, AI avatars can serve as educational materials comparable to videos of human instructors.

However, this result should not be interpreted as "AI can completely replace professors." The experiment focused on short micro-learning, and the number of participants was limited to 83. It did not examine the entire education process, including university courses where students learn difficult concepts over months, discussions, questions, guidance, and evaluation.

Videos conveying predetermined content and classes that change explanations based on students' expressions and understanding are different in nature, even if both are called "lectures."

AI may be sufficiently capable of handling the "information delivery part" of education. However, education also involves roles such as posing questions, identifying student misunderstandings, challenging ways of thinking, and connecting to necessary support.


Is Being Indistinguishable a Success?

When evaluating the quality of AI avatars, the focus often falls on whether they can be distinguished from humans. However, being so sophisticated that they are indistinguishable does not necessarily equate to educational success.

In universities, being indistinguishable itself can become a problem.

If students watch a video thinking it features a human instructor, but it was actually generated by AI, it could undermine trust even if the content is accurate. Hiding the true nature of the footage deprives students of important information about how the educational material was produced.

Many universities require students to disclose the use and methods of generative AI in their assignments. If universities do not clearly indicate lectures and materials created with AI, they risk criticism for double standards.

The issue may lie more in using AI avatars without disclosure than in using them at all.

If it is explained that "This video is generated by an AI avatar based on a script created and verified by the responsible instructor" and "Human instructors handle responses to questions and grade evaluations," students can choose educational materials with an understanding of how they are used.

The important thing is not to disguise AI as human-like but to clarify who is responsible for the content and to what extent AI is involved.


Real University Reactions

Dissatisfaction with AI educational materials is not an imaginary issue.

At Staffordshire University in the UK, slides and synthetic voices believed to be AI-generated were used in a coding course, prompting student protests. Reports indicate that the materials contained superficial and repetitive explanations, suddenly introduced U.S. laws despite being a UK course, and had voice accents that changed midway.

One student pointed out the contradiction that while they could face penalties for submitting AI-generated assignments, the university was providing classes using AI. Another student expressed dissatisfaction, stating that if there were only a few useful parts, they could have asked ChatGPT themselves.

In Australia, there is also growing caution about AI-utilized classes.

At Macquarie University, an AI chatbot called "Virtual Peer" was integrated into weekly learning activities for two psychology courses. The university explained that the AI was designed in collaboration with educators and was meant to complement, not replace, classes.

However, in those courses, Zoom tutorials by instructors were previously available for online students. In response to the shift towards AI activities and educational videos, one student complained that they felt disadvantaged by being made to engage with robots instead of human discussions.

The university still offers optional feedback time with human tutors. This is important, but the issue remains whether sufficient opportunities for dialogue are ensured for hundreds of students.

Whether AI is introduced as an additional service or as a replacement for human interaction makes a significant difference in student evaluations.


Three Reactions on Social Media

Looking at posts on social media and online forums, reactions to university education using AI are not simply divided into pros and cons. It is important to note that public posts are voluntary opinions by the authors and do not represent a survey of the entire student body.

 

The strongest reaction is the backlash that it is "not worth the tuition."

Students are seeking interpretations and guidance from experts who have been researching for years, not AI answers available for free or at low cost online. This leads to the question of why they should pay high tuition if AI creates slides and AI voices read them.

The second reaction is a pragmatic view that "there is no problem if properly supervised."

Even if AI is used to create slides, as long as instructors verify the content, explain it in their own words, and answer students' questions, it is merely a production support tool. This perspective accepts it as a tool to improve quality or shorten work time, similar to calculators or search engines.

On LinkedIn, there is also an expectation that AI videos are suitable for multilingualization and online education. On the other hand, some people find avatars distracting and cannot concentrate, while others prefer AI avatars over traditional animation materials. There seems to be considerable individual variation in reactions to appearances.

The third reaction attributes the cause of the problem to the university's management structure rather than individual instructors.

On Reddit, there is a suggestion that instructors are required to achieve excessive results in both education and research, forcing them to use AI within limited time constraints. While students should receive high-quality education, blaming only instructors will not solve chronic staff shortages or excessive workloads.

From this perspective, the increase in AI educational materials is not just a technological innovation. It is also a mirror reflecting how much personnel and time universities allocate to education.


Will Tuition Decrease if Costs Go Down?

Suppose the use of AI avatars reduces video production costs and allows the same educational materials to be provided to thousands. Who will benefit from this economic advantage?

Will students' tuition decrease? Will instructors have more time for individual guidance? Will the frequency of material updates and accessibility improve? Or will it be absorbed into staff reductions or profit margin improvements?

Students' dissatisfaction arises not from AI itself but from the university's failure to answer these questions.

If tuition remains unchanged despite using AI, and only human interaction time decreases, students will perceive it as a reduction in service. Conversely, if 24-hour accessible supplementary materials are added, question and discussion time increases, and learning becomes available in multiple languages, AI may be evaluated as enhancing the value of education.

The criterion for judgment is not just "whether AI was used." It is how the total amount and quality of education received by students have changed due to AI.


Whose Digital Doppelgänger is the Instructor's?

Another overlooked aspect is the rights concerning instructors' likenesses, voices, and lecture content.

If a university creates a digital doppelgänger from a professor's image and voice, it becomes possible to generate new lectures that the professor has not filmed. By rewriting the script, it is technically possible to make the professor speak content they have never spoken.

Can avatars be used after instructors retire? What happens if they move to another university? Who approves the scripts, and who is responsible if there are errors? What means are available to request deletion or correction if a third party misuses the avatar?

Without clear rules, digital doppelgängers created for efficiency could threaten instructors' employment and personal rights.

A survey of international higher education stakeholders indicated that about 40% were open to the possibility of using synthetic avatars in classes. However, concerns about job loss, weakened human relationships, and misuse of personal images were also expressed.

The desire to use and the anxiety coexist. It is convenient to use, but the fear of it spreading without control is a candid feeling from the field.


Minimum Conditions Universities Must Uphold

It is not realistic to uniformly prohibit the introduction of AI instructors. The technology has clear potential for rapid material updates, multilingual support, remote education delivery, repetitive learning, and support for students with disabilities.

On the other hand, to maintain trust, universities need at least the following conditions.

First, clearly indicate to students that the images, voices, and texts are AI-generated.

Second, specify the human instructor who verifies the content and takes final responsibility.

Third, guarantee opportunities for students to ask questions, engage in discussions, and receive individual support from humans.

Fourth, continuously verify learning effectiveness, misinformation, and student satisfaction, and publish the results.

Fifth, contractually define the period and purpose of using instructors' faces, voices, and materials, as well as deletion methods.

Sixth, explain how the cost savings and time generated by AI introduction have been reinvested into the quality of education.

It is also necessary to apply the same principle of transparency to both students and instructors. If students are required to disclose AI usage, universities should also disclose AI usage in educational materials. Without this symmetry, trust in the system cannot be maintained.


The Question is Not Just "Who Spoke?"

The appearance of AI avatars will become even more natural in the future. Human-like features such as blinking, voice fluctuations, gaze, and gestures will be reproduced, making it difficult to distinguish by looking at the screen for just a few seconds.

However, the goal for universities should not be to make AI indistinguishable from humans.

What students truly want to know is who is responsible for those words, who will answer their questions, who will correct errors, and how their tuition is being used for education.

Excellent lectures are not born from perfect pronunciation or smooth visuals alone. Instructors think while hesitating, change explanations based on student reactions, and sometimes move into unplanned discussions. It is in these unpredictable interactions that the human value of education lies.

AI can replicate the appearance of instructors. It can organize knowledge and convey it tirelessly in multiple languages. However, the responsibility to make it worthy of being called university education still rests with humans.

The question to be asked is not "Can you distinguish between human lectures and AI lectures?"

It is "How do we design trustworthy education in an era when they are indistinguishable?"
