"The Apostles are in Antarctica"? How Ancient Religious Texts Became an Urban Legend in the Internet Age

Antarctica, the coldest, most remote, and most mysterious continent on Earth. Could the "Prison of the Fallen Angels," as described in ancient religious texts, exist beneath its thousands of meters of ice?

This hard-to-believe theory is spreading through overseas social media and video sites.

At the center of the debate is an ancient Jewish text known as the "Book of Enoch." While not included in the Bible used by many Christian churches, it details the rebellion of angels, the Nephilim giants, the origins of evil spirits, the pre-flood world, and the final judgment.

Supporters on social media claim that expressions in the text, such as "the ends of the earth," "rooms storing cold and snow," and "a place where heavenly beings are chained," eerily match the subterranean environment of East Antarctica.

Furthermore, the massive mountain range buried under the ice, the isolated subglacial lakes, and the inexplicable radio signals captured by observation devices over Antarctica are being linked to ancient descriptions.

But are these truly evidence of ancient prophecies aligning with modern science, or are they a new urban legend of the internet age, constructed from fragmented facts into a compelling narrative?

Not a "Book Banned from the Bible"

The "Book of Enoch" is a document named after Enoch, who briefly appears in the Old Testament's "Genesis." Enoch is described as the great-grandfather of Noah, a mysterious figure who "walked with God and was no more because God took him away."

However, few researchers believe that the existing "Book of Enoch" was written by Enoch himself from Genesis. It is thought to be a compilation of documents from various periods, edited into its current form.

Its main parts are believed to have been composed during the Second Temple period, several centuries before Christ. Aramaic fragments have been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, confirming it is not a modern forgery but an important resource for understanding ancient Jewish thought.

On the other hand, online articles often describe it as "banned by the church" or "removed from the Bible because it contained inconvenient truths." However, this expression is not accurate.

While the "Book of Enoch" is not considered canonical by most of Judaism, Catholicism, Protestantism, or the Eastern Orthodox Church, it is still treated as part of the Bible by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and others. It was not simply banned worldwide; its status varies by region and denomination.

Regarding why it was not adopted as canonical, there was no single decision to "hide secrets." It is more natural to consider that its treatment varied over a long historical process, involving factors like authorship, date of composition, usage within communities, and consistency with doctrine.

The Rebellion of 200 "Guardian Angels"

The part of the "Book of Enoch" known as the "Book of the Watchers" is crucial to the Antarctic theory.

It tells of angels, translated as "watchers" or "guardians," who abandoned the heavenly order to descend to Earth and take human women as wives. Their number is said to be 200, and the giant beings born from them were the Nephilim.

The Nephilim consumed Earth's resources and eventually attacked humans and animals, filling the world with violence. The angels taught humans knowledge they were not meant to have, such as weapon-making, metalworking, magic, astrology, and cosmetics.

Thus, the issue in this story is not merely romance or interspecies marriage. It is the breaking of the boundary between heaven and earth and the introduction of technology and knowledge that humans were not prepared to handle, accelerating the world's corruption.

God commands that the angels be bound and imprisoned in dark pits or abysses until the day of judgment. Enoch is led by the angel Uriel to a place at "the ends of heaven and earth," where he sees seven stars like burning mountains.

Uriel explains that this place is "the prison of the stars and the host of heaven," where those who defied God's command are bound until the appointed time.

This depiction is the starting point for the theory that fallen angels are sealed beneath Antarctica.

The Four "Coincidences" Supporting the Antarctic Theory

The theory spreading on social media combines four main elements.

The first is the expression "the ends of the earth."

Supporters interpret Enoch's journey as pointing to Antarctica, given its location at the southernmost point of the Earth. However, the ancient "ends of the earth" is not a geographical term based on modern latitude and longitude. It appears in many ancient texts as a religious expression denoting the boundary of the known world, an entrance to the divine realm, or the edge of cosmic order.

The second is the expression "rooms of cold" or "storehouses of snow and frost."

Antarctica holds the majority of Earth's ice, and extreme low temperatures are recorded in its interior. Therefore, the expression of a place storing cold is said to match Antarctica's characteristics.

However, the "Book of Enoch" also describes storage places or gates for natural phenomena like wind, rain, clouds, thunder, and stars. This was an ancient way of explaining the workings of the universe narratively and does not necessarily indicate specific meteorological observation points.

The third is the Gamburtsev Mountains beneath the East Antarctic ice sheet.

This mountain range is covered by thousands of meters of ice and cannot be seen directly from the surface. Surveys using airborne ice-penetrating radar and gravimeters have revealed the presence of rugged mountains and valleys similar to the Alps.

The fact of an "invisible massive mountain range" and "ancient terrain sealed in ice" certainly stimulates the imagination. However, the existence of the mountains themselves is a subject of earth sciences, studying tectonic shifts, long-term erosion, and ice sheet formation history. No prison or artificial structures have been discovered.

The fourth is the anomalous radio signals detected by an observation experiment called ANITA over Antarctica.

ANITA is a device that flies over Antarctica on a balloon, observing radio waves produced by ultra-high-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays. In 2006 and 2014, unusual signals were reported that appeared to come from below the ground, unlike typical cosmic rays.

Due to their difficult-to-explain angles with standard particle physics, multiple hypotheses have been discussed, including new particles, unknown interactions, and special reflections within the ice.

It's important to note that "unconfirmed cause" and "evidence of supernatural beings" are entirely different.

In science, unexplained means that there is insufficient observational data to narrow down existing hypotheses. It does not mean that any explanation can be inserted at will.

Moreover, what ANITA captured was not a "voice heard from underground" but a very short radio pulse. Linking this to the cries of angels described in the "Book of Enoch" is a narrative association, not scientific reasoning.

Why is this theory so appealing?

The reason the Antarctic theory is spreading is likely not because the evidence is strong, but because the story is highly complete.

Firstly, the setting is Antarctica.

Antarctica is difficult for the general public to visit freely, and much of its vast interior has never been seen directly by humans. International treaties, various national research stations, and restrictions on military use easily transform into the imagination that "countries around the world are jointly hiding something."

Secondly, the "Book of Enoch" is a "book that people have heard of but don't know the content" for many.

It is not a complete fabrication but an actual ancient document, with fragments found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. This fact that "part of it is definitely real" gives the impression that the interpretations derived from it are also real.

Thirdly, real unexplained phenomena are incorporated.

The subglacial mountains, lakes, and ANITA's anomalous signals all exist. Connecting them with "ancient texts," "fallen angels," and "final judgment" creates a story that appears far more convincing than a complete fabrication.

However, just because real elements are lined up does not mean causal relationships arise between them.

The ancient text mentions cold. Antarctica is cold. Antarctica has underground mountains. Unusual radio signals were observed in Antarctica. Therefore, there is a prison of angels underground—this flow lacks decisive evidence to reach a conclusion.

Faith, Skepticism, and Entertainment Coexist on Social Media

Reactions on social media are largely divided into three categories.

The first is the reaction that takes this theory as evidence of the approaching end times or the correctness of the Bible.

Claims can be seen that the "Book of Enoch" was excluded from the canon to hide the truth, that access to Antarctica is restricted to protect secrets, and that the anomalous radio signals might be signals from entities trapped underground.

Some posts connect it with UFOs and ancient astronaut theories, interpreting guardian angels as extraterrestrial beings and the Nephilim as genetically engineered life forms. Religious apocalypticism, aliens, and government cover-up theories are fused into one narrative.

The second is the reaction that calls for a cautious reading from a religious or academic standpoint.

While the "Book of Enoch" is important for understanding ancient Jewish thought, it should not be decoded as apocalyptic literature using modern maps; the name Antarctica never appears, and reading symbolic expressions as geographical information is unreasonable.

Even among Christians, evaluations are not uniform. Some read it as a historical document, some recognize authority close to the canon, and some caution against using it as a basis for faith.

The third is the reaction that enjoys it purely as entertainment.

In articles reposted on Taiwanese bulletin boards, comments reminiscent of Japanese anime and sci-fi works, such as "Apostles of Antarctica," "Third Impact," and "Underground Anomalies," appeared one after another. It is a reaction that plays by converting it into familiar pop culture rather than believing or not.

This tendency is likely to occur in Japan as well.

"Apostles" and Antarctica as Imagined by Japanese People

In Japan, discussions about the canon and apocrypha of the Bible are not as directly connected to daily life as in some Western regions. Therefore, the topic of the "Book of Enoch" is more likely to be perceived as occult, ancient history, urban legend, or a sci-fi worldview rather than a matter of faith.

When encountering words like "fallen angels," "apostles," "Antarctica," "beings sealed underground," and "forbidden knowledge given to humanity," many Japanese might first think of settings from anime, manga, and games rather than religious history.

The structure of linking Antarctica with mysterious life forms and global catastrophe is a theme repeatedly addressed by famous Japanese works.

This is not inherently negative. Interest in ancient texts through stories and entertainment can lead to learning about religious history and archaeology.

What requires caution is when the boundary between fictional excitement and historical or scientific facts becomes blurred.

In short videos on social media, only the sensational elements like "forbidden book removed from the Bible," "NASA detected signals from underground," and "predicted Antarctica thousands of years ago" are compressed into a few seconds.

In that process, "not canonical in many denominations" changes to "banned by authorities," "unusual radio signals" to "voices from underground," and "symbolic ends of the earth" to "coordinates of Antarctica."

Even if the difference in each expression seems small, the conclusion changes significantly when accumulated.

The True Warning Conveyed by the "Book of Enoch"

Even if the Antarctic theory is denied, the value of the "Book of Enoch" itself is not lost.

Rather, what resonates with modern society is likely the story of the guardians giving humans "knowledge they were not ready to handle," rather than geographical codes.

In the "Book of Enoch," knowledge itself is not deemed evil. It is the expansion of weapons, technology, and desires without the ethics or order to control power that leads to ruin.

In today's world, where generative AI, gene editing, autonomous weapons, and surveillance technologies are rapidly developing, this theme is far from outdated.

Every time humans acquire new power, they have confused the fact that they can use it with whether they should use it. Ancient authors may have depicted that danger through the story of angels and giants.

In that sense, reinterpreting the warning of the "Book of Enoch" in modern times holds value.

However, it is not a story about monsters emerging if we dig under Antarctica. It is a warning that when uncontrollable power is used at will, society itself creates "giants."

Not an Ancient Prophecy, but a Mirror Reflecting the Present

At present, there is no scientific evidence to suggest the existence of a prison of fallen angels beneath the Antarctic ice.

The "Book of Enoch" does not mention the name Antarctica, nor does it record coordinates that can be identified as modern East Antarctica. The Gamburtsev Mountains do exist, but they are not evidence of an underground prison. ANITA's anomalous signals are subjects of research but do not indicate supernatural phenomena.

Yet, this theory captivates people because we seek stories in unknown places.

Even in today's world, where blank spaces on maps are decreasing, there are still areas beyond human sight, such as the ocean floor, underground, space, and beneath Antarctica's ice sheets. Ancient myths, scientific mysteries, and modern anxieties fill these blanks.

As world events, climate change, pandemics, and AI development continue to unfold unpredictably, people increasingly want to explain complex realities with one grand narrative.

The theory of the prison of fallen angels teaches us not what lies beneath Antarctica,

but rather the psychology of modern people who want to connect ancient texts and scientifically unexplained phenomena and share them as "hidden truths."
