In October 2025, three mosquitoes believed to be Culiseta annulata, a species adapted to cold climates, were identified for the first time in Iceland. They were collected around a red wine trap and identified by a laboratory. Although it is not yet confirmed whether they have established a population, the prevailing view is that climate change is expanding the seasonal window in which they can survive. On social media, reactions range from lamenting the climate crisis with comments like "the last stronghold has fallen" to more measured responses pointing out that this species is already present in cold regions. In terms of tourism and daily life, basic measures such as using insect repellent and managing standing water are recommended.
