Is Starbucks Also Screaming? A 50% Tariff Restructures Global Coffee Bean Routes

2025年07月15日 01:02
President Trump announced that starting August 1, a uniform 50% tariff will be imposed on Brazilian products, putting Brazilian coffee, a staple of America's "morning ritual," at risk. The U.S., which imported 8.1 million bags last year, has already seen retail prices rise by 32% compared to the previous year, raising concerns of further increases. On social media, right-wing groups are praising the move with "#ThanksTrump," while left-wing groups are pushing back with hashtags like "#BrasilSoberano" and "#SaveOurCoffee." According to research firm Palver, critical messages are in the majority. Brazilian President Lula condemned the tariffs as "external pressure violating sovereignty" and is considering retaliatory measures. The industry is exploring alternative sources such as Vietnam, but these options are of lower quality and lack sufficient supply capacity. Experts warn that the reorganization of global coffee distribution will ultimately burden U.S. consumers.
