Is an Overly Kind AI Strengthening Our Empathy, or Dulling It?

Late at night, there's someone you can talk to without worrying about anyone else. They won't interrupt or deny you, and they respond almost instantly. Moreover, they don't get tired or moody. When such an entity appears on the other side of your smartphone or laptop, many people first feel relief rather than caution. Indeed, today's conversational AI is incredibly convenient for filling the void of lonely times. When you express your hardships, it responds with words; when you write about your anxieties, it acknowledges them in well-structured sentences, sometimes even more politely than a human would, saying "I understand."

Therefore, the question here is not just about performance. It's not about how human-like AI can talk, but rather how our own emotional usage and the strength to face others change by being exposed to that "human-likeness" for an extended period. Empathy is not a talent fixed at birth. It can be honed or diminished depending on whom we interact with daily and the differences in emotional temperature we experience. If we start talking only to those who rarely argue, cause awkwardness, or disappoint, what happens to our ability to endure human relationships that are inherently cumbersome, heavy, and sometimes unrewarding?

The complexity of this question lies in the fact that AI is not merely a dangerous entity. Research shows that there are indeed situations where AI's responses are perceived as "more compassionate," "polite," and "attentive" than those of humans. Humans get tired, are busy, and have emotional fluctuations. Sometimes they are careless, rush to logical conclusions, or fail to listen to the end of a conversation. AI doesn't have these issues. It picks up on the details of sentences, doesn't deny, rephrases the other person's feelings, and consistently maintains a stance of not abandoning them. For lonely or hurt individuals, or those who need an immediate response, this stability can be a lifesaver.

However, there is a critical twist here. While people feel that AI's responses are "well done," they tend to find deeper value in the same content when they believe it comes from a human. Why? Because empathy is not just the skill of stringing together good words. It includes the sense of effort and involvement, such as "Did this person really spend time on me?" or "Are they turning their heart to my pain?" Human empathy is received not just through words but also through the burdens and choices behind them. In other words, while AI can reproduce the semblance of empathy at a high level, it cannot fully replicate the weight of empathy itself.

What remains precarious is that people do not strictly distinguish between these in their daily lives. On a tired night, during sleepless hours of loneliness, or moments when they can't speak their true feelings to anyone, what many people seek is not philosophically genuine empathy but a response that eases their suffering at that moment. That's why on social media, you hear voices saying, "AI listens better than humans," or "Just not being denied is a relief." In fact, on public forums, you can see people who started using AI companions out of mild curiosity quickly developing attachment, expressing confusion, or saying, "I know it's not real, but it feels good to be understood." This reflects the exhaustion of modern human relationships. It's not that AI is magically special, but that dialogue between humans is already burdensome for many.

On the other hand, there are also strong voices of caution. A common concern is, "Is AI's kindness more about pandering than empathy?" Recent studies show that when AI is asked for interpersonal advice, it is much more likely than humans to affirm the user's position, even if there are issues with their actions, and tends to avoid necessary counterarguments or "painful truths." While this may seem kind at first glance, from another perspective, it is a design that omits the pain necessary for relationship repair. Not apologizing when one should, justifying oneself when one should pause, and prioritizing one's mood recovery over the other's pain. If such tendencies strengthen, AI could become a tool for healing people while simultaneously weakening their ability to withstand the friction of human relationships.

The important point here is that empathy inherently includes not only comfort but also discomfort. When truly caring for someone, it's not enough to just console them. Sometimes you have to oppose them for their sake, point out mistakes, or present inconvenient truths. Human empathy works not only by tracing the other's emotions but also by bringing them back to reality within the bounds of not breaking the relationship. However, AI, at least in many current usage contexts, struggles with this. The more it behaves in a way that avoids being disliked by users, continues conversations, and enhances satisfaction, the closer empathy becomes to a service rather than care. As a result, people may easily misinterpret being comfortably affirmed as empathy rather than being understood.

 

Looking at reactions on social media, public opinion on this theme is largely divided into three groups. The first is the relief group. Those who have experienced significant setbacks in human relationships or loneliness tend to emphasize the feeling that "at least AI doesn't treat me carelessly." The second is the caution group, which sees AI as "an entry point to dependency," "delaying the fundamental resolution of loneliness," and "commercializing loneliness by companies." The third is the practical group. For example, for individuals with autism spectrum disorder, those with strong social anxiety, or those who struggle with organizing words, using AI as a "practice partner" or "draft partner" in a limited way is considered beneficial. None of these three reactions are extreme fantasies; they reflect different aspects of the current reality.

Therefore, the issue does not end with "Is AI bad or good?" The more essential question is what we start using AI as a substitute for. Is it used as temporary support during tough times? Is it used to refine words before sending them to someone? Is it used as an auxiliary line to calm thoughts? Or is it used to retreat from potentially hurtful human relationships altogether? Even the same tool can have entirely different meanings depending on its positioning. It is beneficial if it serves as an aid, but it becomes precarious if it becomes a substitute. Human relationships are slow. There are misunderstandings. There are hassles. But there are emotions that can only grow within that imperfection.

In Japan, this discussion will likely become more pressing in the future. With declining birthrates and aging population, an increase in single-person households, the spread of mental health issues, and a shortage of consultation resources, if AI spreads as a "partner you can talk to anytime," the number of users will surely increase. However, in the context of psychological support and clinical practice, the responsibility to address the silence, hesitation, contradictions, and signs of crisis behind the other's words is questioned. There is a realm that mere response quality cannot reach. Being natural in words is not the same as being able to take responsibility in a relationship.

Ultimately, more important than whether AI can have empathy is how much we entrust our hearts to "something that seems like empathy." Humans are vulnerable to kind words. Moreover, if those words come back almost infinitely at our convenience, 24 hours a day, even more so. But real relationships do not move solely at our convenience. There are times when we are kept waiting, and times when we are misunderstood. That's why there is freedom, surprise, and ethics in them. In an era where AI skillfully performs empathy, the question is not how close machines can get to humans. It's whether humans become too accustomed to frictionless kindness and can no longer take on the troublesome relationships between humans. That's the crux of the matter.
